Surprised by how good The Waterboys were on Thursday night, set the tone for the whole weekend. That Thursday night top spot is proving to be one of the best nights of the whole Festival year after year. Good marketing? Yes, and why not? Friday, went to see Shirley Collins talk with Pete Paphides, this was a gem! The anecdotes and humour from Shirley were superb, poignantly ending with a beautiful, haunting "Gilderoy" which Shirley introduced. Jonathan Wilson took to the stage in beautiful sunshine which perfectly complemented his Laurel Canyon sound, many people around me were openly saying "who is this guy" (I know, how could they not have heard him?). He was great, obvious echoes of CSNY, Jackson Browne, bit of Floyd, even a bit of Frank Zappa, to my ears anyway. Sun Kil Moon followed on the Mouuntain Stage, Mark Kozelek being very complementary about the beauty of Green Man and Crickhowell. That voice is sublime, especially on "I Can't Live Without My Mothers Love" beautiful, heartbreaking lyrics. A triumph! Up to the Far Out Tent for Toy, again a really good tight band, never listened to them much before, but was impressed on this showing. They were followed by Polica, another revelation for me. Channy Leaneagh is a mesmerising figure onstage, maybe a bit samey? Maybe, but I really enjoyed their set. Back to the Mountain Stage and Daughter, what a difference a bit of success does for you, from the Walled Garden to the Mountain Stage in a few short years. A good set, probably a bit overshadowed by some brilliant stage lighting. Oh well, it's Saturday morning and time to get up and out around the site on another lovely, sunny morning. See you later!
