Forum's Favourites

It'd be interesting (for me anyway) to see just who my fellow forumites are looking forward to seeing this year. I've often wondered is it really the headliners that pull in the average Green man punter. My particular must-sees are evolving daily and up to the time I've the official line-up times and stages I have a little sinking feeling about potential clashes. Only my 3rd Green Man this year and as yet I've been fairly lucky re. clashes except for last years TTMOE v Willy Mason clash which was softened somewhat by an extended Mr Mason set earlier in the Rough Trade shop. Anyway, the rules for this thread should you wish to participate: List your 5 "must sees" for this year. No more and no less than 5. Your list can be changed as time goes on Any clashes that are revealed will gain 7 sympathy points per clash. A total of 36 sympathy points or more will earn you 1 free pint of Growler.

Er... I'll go first:

In no particular order today's top 5 are ...

1. Sam Amidon
2. John Cale
3. Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog
4. Midlake
5. Phosphorescent

Slugger this is brilliant!

I'd love to post my top five bands but I'm not going to as I've got insider line-up knowledge. - Good job I'm a trustworthy Jack Russell, or Slugger you'd owe me a few pints ;)

Woof Woof!
x

my selection right at this moment, as we speak ......
Phosphorescent
Sweet Baboo
Edwyn Collins
James Yorkston
Steve Mason
.....I think!

Urgh this was SO hard, and I'm definitely going to change me mind several times!

- Veronica Falls (love their latest album, and loved their old band The Royal We even more)
- Edwyn Collins (he was amazing at the Union Chapel a few weeks ago)
- James Yorkston (Green Man isnt Green Man without a group hug whilst JYs playing)
- Roy Harper (coz he's a legend)
- Swans (I don't really like my ear-drums)

PLEASE DONT LET ANY OF THESE CLASH WALTER!

2 votes for Phosphorescent already. Really looking forward to him/them.
James Yorkston is bubbling just under my top 5 at the minute. It would just take me to throw on his "Just Beyond the River" cd (what a good album!) this evening and I'm sure he would burst into the top 5 ....
But who would I drop?
Don't know much Steve Mason. I'll have to investigate. Any suggestions where to start Elizabeth?

To be honest Slugger I've only just really got into Steve Mason myself....I love his latest album 'Monkey Minds in the Devil's Time', and I reckon he should play a few off this.
I also loved most of the Beta Band's music.
If anyone else can recommend other albums/tracks I'd really appreciate it

Archie Bronson outfit
moon duo
Public service broadcasting
Half moon run
Allah las

Though i could easily have listed 30,going to be some difficult decisions to make

Hi Silverbirch, have you noticed Fuck Buttons are doing a gig in the tiny Deaf Institute a week on Saturday.

James Yorkston
British Sea Power
Unkown Mortal Orchestra
Woods
Darren Hayman

and maybe Teleman . . . and Public Service Broadcasting . . . and John Cale . . . .

ooooooh 5 is very hard Slugger you meany! We could have 30+ with this year's lineup! : )

Sam Amidon (his new album sounds amazing!)
Local Natives
The Horrors (new album!)
Buke & Gase (love everything i've heard so far... wondering what stage they'll be playing now...)
Ben Howard (there i said it- big soft spot for BH. saw him at Brixton Academy and it was very Bon Iver in my opinion).

Newbie to forum and to Green Man...
My top 5 is
Phosphorescent - can't miss this
Steve Mason
Parquet Courts
Public Service Broadcasting
Lord Huron

Tough Call.It will be the first green man i'm missing in six years(new child) but if i was there my list would be-
1.Phosphorescent.
2.Lord Huron.
3.Woods.
4.John Cale.
5.Allah Las
With numerous others bubbling under.
On the subject of Steve Mason, his debut LP Boys Outside is excellent and a couple of great tracks from that one would be lost and found and i let here in,check them out.

thanks little otter, I will give those recommendations a listen. I really love his anger and social comment on the new album......there's plenty to get angry about at the moment.

1. Steve Mason
2. Villagers
3. British Sea Power
4. Phosphorescent
5. Edwyn Collins

with Jon Langford, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Local Natives, and lots more bubbling under.

I'm off to Primavera Sound in a couple of weeks so will get the opportunity to see Phosphorescent there too, along with a good smattering of other Green Man acts, including Woods, Allah-lahs, Parquet Courts, Local Natives and Swans. Oh, and My Bloody Valentine and Nick Cave. It'll never be as nice as Green Man to be honest, but handy that I get a couple of stabs at seeing some stuff I might otherwise miss due to clashes. I'm going to have to mull over my five to see over the weekend I think

1. Sam Amidon - totally unique
2. Bears Den - beautiful vocals
3. This Is The Kit - floaty and fun
4. Stornoway - authentic
5. Band of Horses - rock & roll

Tricky but at the moment in no particular order
1.Swans
2.Parquet Courts
3.Fuck Buttons
4.Phosphorescent
5.Allah Las
With about another 30 bubbling under including the ever entertaining Julian

Woods
Midlake
Sam amidon
Lord Huron
Boards of Canada

Hi bphd, hadn't spotted that. Would love to go but I've got the saplings this weekend so will struggle.

Got 2 shows next week though ... John Grant at the Ritz & then Valerie June at The Deaf Inst

Thanks for the heads up though - appreciate it

Tried with no success to get the night off work for John Grant, really like the new album----got tickets for Fuck buttons next sat and Lord Huron the thursday after.

Thanks,i believe they are playing on the Thursday at Gm so got tickets in case i miss their performance there.Let me know if Nataly Dawn is worth watching please.

Their website suggests Saturday?

The Unofficial Forum has the days for those acts that have been specific on their websites. Any updates are welcome there for those of us starting to worry about potential clashes.

Steve Mason

Edwyn Collins

Fuck Buttons (have been assured I will like!!)

Roy Harper

John Cale (other half's fave so will have to be counted in clashes)

I've escaped any potential clashes with my original 5.

Elsewhere however ... The Legends (John Cale and Roy Harper) V James Yorkston/ Arbouretum and then later that night Band of Horses V Allah-Las and the next day potentially Cowbois V LAU

Damn you Green Man for such a good line-up !!!!!

Mine would be:

1) Stornoway
2) Edwyn Collins
3) Ben Howard
4) Villagers
5) Mikal Cronin

1) Johnny Flynn (obviously)

2) Parquet Courts

3) The Horrors

4) Half Moon Run

5) Villagers

Sunday evening is a nightmare for clashes. Half Moon Run / BSP / Local Natives all probably overlapping could not be worse...

1. Phosphorescent
2. Public Service Broadcasting
3. Unknown Mortal Orchestra
4. Patti Smith (!!)
5. Buke & Gase

In no particular order

Swans, Patti Smith, Allah Las, Phosphorescent, Public Service Broaadcasting

This changes daily though

An abundance of riches...

What to choose...well I think I know...in no particular order:

  • Teleman
  • British Sea Power
  • Low
  • Julian Cope (don't care if he's just talking, it's been years since I last saw him)
  • Patti Cale...sorry...John Smith... am I allowed to combine if I can't decide?

I liked John Smith...he played a few years ago :D

I have homework to do...

I currently can;t get past Patti Smith and Roy Harper...

Top Five to follow.

Revision

Besotted with the Low album

1. Low

2. Sam Amidon

4. Fossel Collective
5. Stornoway

In no particular order:-

I'll probably go and see Phosphorescent, although I've never heard them, just because so many peeps have included them in their lists here.
