OK so I can't compete with you London types but a quick skim tells me the fllowing are playing this autumn at Birmingham's finest venue, the Hare & Hounds in Kings Heath, less than 5 minutes from my house: Keston Cobblers Club, RM Hubbert, Tunng, Lanterns on the Lake, Euros Childs, Sweet Baboo and Dutch Uncles. A short trip into town and at the Institute there's Everything Everything, Steve Mason, Public Service Broadcasting, Half Moon Run and Stornoway. And no clashes.

Unusually everything I currently have booked is all-seated (namely John Grant, Gruff Rhys, First Aid Kit and Belle & Sebastian). These days that suites me just fine! Think I might go see J Mascis and Sharon Van Etten again too, neither of which will be seated

Normal conduct restored at the weekend however, for Robert Plant.

See Father John Misty has a new album out next year and is also doing UK dates, including Thekla at end of Feb. Could be due a return to Green Man too?

I'll be there for John Grant. Looking forward to that, and have a feeling it's going to be a bit special. Wasn't aware of the HGM date. Is that in The Lantern? Also contemplating another trip to Bristol for Sharon Van Etten next spring now

The Staves at Glee Club, Cardiff on February 16th. Be good to see them again after a particularly rain-soaked performance on the Mountain Stage a couple of years back.

i'm thinking of blowing out HGM to see the staves in london

he was great last time i saw him

but much prefer him solo to the full band set-up

and the new record's not doing much for me so far...

plus we get to sit down for the staves

a major consideration at this stage of life

Coming up in Birmingham before Christmas (and I've actually got my arse into gear and booked tickets this time!): Simone Felice, Sweet Baboo & The Pictish Trail (both Glee Club), Hiss Golden Messenger, Laetitia Sadier (Hare & Hounds), Goodnight Lenin album launch (Institute), Trembling Bells & Mike Heron (Kings Heath Kitchen Garden Cafe). Gruff Rhys and Nat Johnson in the new year!

I saw Simone Felice a couple of weeks ago Kras. I'm not the biggest fan of his studio albums but he put on a great show and his stuff sounded great stripped down. Just himself on guitar and a Cork singer called Anna Mitchell filling in the gaps with accordian, keyboard, backing vocals and anything else she could get her hands on! Lovely stuff altogether.

Yeah, i bought a couple of his albums after I saw him earlier in the year and though the songs are good the production is too smooth, much better live.

Anybody going to The Whiskey Sessions in Manchester next weekend? It's a decent line-up (British Sea Power, Treetop Flyers, I am Kloot to name a few of the 24 bands listed) and it was only £70 for both days & that included some free whiskey!

Just won two tickets to see Pictish Trail and Sweet Baboo in Manchester.

Johnny launched a ridiculous little competition on facebook and I was one of the winners!

Ooh, I knew Sweet Baboo was playing at a pub in Cardiff in December, but hadn't realised it was supporting Pictish Trail. Even better, it's a Saturday night

Unfortunately I'm awaywhen they play Cardiff - I would have liked to see that.

Just spotted that Euros Childs is playing in Canton too, a week later on December 13 at St Luke's Church, but unfortunately I'm away for that one

Well done Elizabeth! I won three Greenslade albums and one Heavy Metal Kids album in a Yorkshire Evening Post comp in possibly 1974. Offf to see Johnny and Sweet Babs tomorrow at the Glee club.

I think "just bloody lovely" is as full a review as any of us here need.

I'm afraid I'm using rather less complimentary words about The Wave Pictures at the moment. We have a short family holiday in Spain booked for next February - departing on the 12th, returning on the 17th. So what do WP go and do? Announce a tour playing Cardiff on the 12th and Bristol on the 17th ... feckers!

Never mind says I ... I'll go and see them in London on the 25th. Then I see Krill are embarking on their first ever UK tour playing London on the 25th. But they're also playing Bristol on the 28th so that would do nicely if it weren't for the fact that Fr John Misty is also on the 28th in Bristol ... Arrgh!

So the only solution is to pray there are no delays getting home from Spain on the 17th, drop the bags and race back across to Bristol for Wave Pictures. It might not go down too well on the domestic front but it's surely better than cancelling the holiday :)

I had a similar Wave Pictures moment. Having lobbied local promoters for the past couple of years to book them and having almost got to the stage of seriously thinking about doing it myself they've been booked to play the Hare & Hounds (my local) on February 15 (the day after Gruff Rhys is also playing!). Very nearly had a panic attack when it occcurred that this was when I'd be in New Orleans for a conference! Phew, it's the day before.

I'm sensing some anguish here Peridot, which almost forces me to hold back on saying just how wonderful Sweet Baboo and Pictish Trail gig was last night. Not a hard sell in these circles I'm sure, but be hard pressed to get more intimate than this. At one point Johnny shared a packet of biscuits around, and Stephen only lives a few doors down on the same street.

Great music and biscuits too! What more could anyone ask for.

Not of the same stature but equally intimate was the Adrian Crowley in-store at Rough Trade West last week with just six people there. Three of those appeared to be his greatest fans however so what we lacked in numbers was made up for with enthusiam. Whaen Adrian introduced hismelf and his accompanying cellist, somone suggested the audience do the same, so we all ended up on first name terms. A packet of biscuits would have been the icing on the cake!

Can I just say a heartfelt thank you to all those who banged on about Hiss Golden Messenger earlier in the year. Lateness of Dancers is a gem and I'm working my through the back catalogue now. He/they were brilliant at the Hare and Hounds last Friday, possibly the gig of the year. The guy on guitar and keys (Phil Cook?) was brilliant and also did an excellent support set. Is he also in Megafaun?

careful with megafaun

they can be considerably more 'experimental' on record than they are live

so if at first a record seem impenetrable, give it a mo - a much jollier and accesible song will be along any moment

the self-titled from 2011 is the easiest entry point

along with the previous year's mini-album, 'heretofore'

Lovely night on Saturday at the very intimate Kitchen Garden Cafe in Kings Heath with Trembling Bells and Mike Heron. They played Feast of Stephen from Mike's 'Smiling Men' album, one of my favourites of all time, nearly cried.

Sadly none of these dates are in easy or even moderate reach for me...will just have to hope for a GM 2015 appearance, along with  BoC (I can dream!)

Yo homies ... wassup?

Slowly getting back into the swing of things after a slightly fraught start to the year.

Have kicked off in style however with a trip to Glasgow to see King Creosote perform the full 'From Scotland with Love' set as part of the Celtic Connections festival.

Twenty musicians / backing singers playing to a packed Royal Concert Hall made for one of the most joyful exuberant performances I've enjoyed. Saw some terrific after-hours sessions too- I think a longer trip up is on the cards for next year.

Now looking forward to hearing some of the Waterboy's new material week after next.

What's anyone else got on the horizon?

how good was Kenny and band peridot.  that format of film and live score made for something truly special.  Sara Watkins/Sarah Jarosz and Lambchop to follow next week for me as part of the same festival but I might have already experienced my musical highlight of 2015 last night; it'll take something to top that!

Off to watch Mark Lanegan shortly,then Blossoms,John Bramwell,Sleaford mods,Stereo mcs,Eat lights become lights/Jane Weaver and Last Harbour a band who receive great acclaim but not success and any fans of Tindersticks would love.

Julian H Cope tomorrow, then Count Arthur Strong, Wave Pictures, The Magic Flute, Jesus & Mary Chain and Father John Misty to take me up until the end of February. Slightly further ahead Sleaford Mods, Iceage and Sharon Van Etten. Variety is the spice of life after all

I've been thinking the same CP ... it's difficult to imagine anything trumping that in the foreseeable future.

You weren't fortunate enough to see the reworking of Martyn Bennett's 'Grit' by any chance were you? I watched the BBC recording of it on the journey home and have just watched it again. It's a remarkable piece of work. Grab it on the iplayer folks before it disappears - you won't regret it.

Great selection there BPH. I'm extremely peeved at having committed to something else on the date that Sleaford Mods are playing in Cardiff, but I will be catching the MC's there.

Anyone heading north (or south!) for the BBC 6 Music Festival this weekend?  Cracking line-up, with a certain amount of Green Man crossover.  I have tickets for all 3 nights but couldn't get any day tickets in the lottery.  Not too distraught though.  No timings published yet but aiming to see the following:

 

War On Drugs/Mogwai/Interpol/Sleater-Kinney (Friday at the Academy, no potential clashes as they are all on the same stage)

 

Saturday (Sage):  Maximo Park, Kate Tempest/Eliza Carthy, Fall, Villagers, Father John Misty, Royal Blood, Hot Chip, Gruff Rhys, Cribs, Django Django

 

Sunday (Sage): King Creosote, Wire, Public Service Broadcasting, Neneh Cherry, Gaz Coombes, British Sea Power, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Charlatans

A magical little set to open the evening at the Sage.  They were joined by Kate's drummer who tapped pads and pushed buttons and things.  Eliza played guitar and fiddle, and sang counterpoint to Kate's magnetic delivery.  She had totally passed me by until I listened to her album as pre-show prep but I enjoyed this so much I went to see her again an hour later with her proper band.  I wish I knew more but the first song had Eliza strumming and singing a traditional song of a soldier returning home alternating with some really harrowing verse about a modern soldier's encounter with an IED in Afghanistan.  This was the 2nd or 3rd 'song'.
